Infrared Touchscreen

Essentially, infrared touchscreens have photodetectors and IR LEDs. The touch panel on this type of touchscreen works with the help of infrared beams. This is enabled by the photodetectors that detect the disturbance of the infrared beams. When touch is detected, this information is relayed to the controller for processing. 

IR touchscreens are quite efficient compared to other types of touchscreens. This is because they support multitouch, have a short response time, and do not scratch easily. Therefore, you will see them applied mostly in large screens such as touchscreen LED video walls.

Surface Acoustical Wave touchscreen (SAW)

SAW touchscreen technology consists of a panel with a transmitting and receiving transducer, and reflectors. Transducers are devices that convert variations in pressure into electrical energy. These two transducers are placed in the X and Y axis of the touch panel. 

The method used by this type of touchscreen to detect touch commands is quite different from all other touchscreens. In essence, SAW touchscreens use wave patterns to detect the input from the finger or stylus.
